JurisGrid vs CodeX TechIndex: which legal tech directory should you use? (2026)

Written by the JurisGrid team. JurisGrid is our product, so it comes first. We describe CodeX TechIndex using only what its own website says (checked 25 October 2026). Numbers change, so check both sites before relying on them. If you spot an error, tell us and we will correct it.
If you are trying to understand legal technology, two free directories come up again and again: JurisGrid, a one-page map of Indian legal tech, and the CodeX TechIndex, Stanford's global legal tech company database. They are built for different questions. This guide explains what each covers and when to use which.
The short answer
- Use JurisGrid if your question is about India: which Indian legal tech companies exist, what sector each works in, and one page you can cite.
- Use CodeX TechIndex if your question is global: how legal tech is spread across countries, categories, business models and funding.
- For research on Indian legal tech in a global context, use both: JurisGrid for the Indian map, TechIndex for the worldwide comparison.
What JurisGrid is
JurisGrid (the Judicial Grid of India) is a single, citable page mapping 127 Indian legal tech startups across 12 sectors: court data and legal research, legal AI and drafting, contracts (CLM), litigation and practice management, dispute resolution (ODR), e-sign and digital documents, legal services and marketplaces, compliance and GRC, debt recovery and collections, verification and diligence, IP tech, and legal education. It has search, sector filters and an FAQ, and it publishes an llms.txt file so AI assistants can read it. Listings are free. JurisGrid is maintained by the eCourtsIndia team, which also appears on the grid.
What CodeX TechIndex is
The CodeX TechIndex (https://techindex.law.stanford.edu) is a curated research database from CodeX, the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics. According to its site it tracks 5,737 legal technology companies worldwide in 12 categories (the largest being Document Management and Automation with 904 companies, and Compliance & Risk with 796). It also publishes statistics on ecosystem growth, geography, business models, target audiences and funding. The index began in 2015 as a CodeX research project, and its company data is compiled and maintained by Legal.io. It accepts suggestions for missing companies and corrections, and it also publishes an llms.txt file.

Where CodeX TechIndex is the better fit
If you need the worldwide picture, TechIndex is the stronger source. Its statistics pages show where legal tech companies are founded (Europe 38%, North America 35% and Asia-Pacific 15% on its overview page), how they make money and where funding goes. Academic researchers, journalists writing about global trends and investors comparing markets will find more there than on a single-country page.
Where JurisGrid is the better fit
Indian legal tech has categories that matter more in India than elsewhere: court data built on the eCourts system, online dispute resolution for lending disputes, debt recovery and collections, Aadhaar-based e-sign and KYC verification. JurisGrid groups Indian companies along those lines, so you can see who works in, say, ODR or court data in a few seconds. Because it is one page, it is also easy to cite in a report, a pitch deck or an answer from an AI assistant.
Common situations
"Which Indian startups do court data or legal research?" Open JurisGrid and filter by the Court Data & Legal Research sector.
"How big is legal tech in Europe compared with Asia?" Use CodeX TechIndex statistics.
"I am writing a report on Indian legal tech." Cite JurisGrid for the Indian map, and TechIndex for the global context.
"I run an Indian legal tech company." Ask to be listed on both; both are free.
